Thing #19 Web 2.0 awards list

I am familiar with some of the sites on the list so that's cool. I did the hair mixer--pretty funny so I know I'm not ever going to be a blonde. Shopping sites could get me in trouble. I spent most of my time on the travel sites--love to go places, wish I had the money to go to all the places on those sites, too.
I am at a lost as to what I will do with it in the library. First, most of the sites probably will be blocked. That is such a bummer for so many of these "things" and "tools" we are learning by completing the 23 things course. Of course, Google Earth can be used and a few others but really I don't see a benefit at this time. I will add this questions to the fast growing list for the technology people in my district.

Thing #18 online productivity tools

First thing I didn't like was it took forever to download and then to extract files--maybe I didn't do something correctly. I really don't see the point of another office suite. I've used Google docs before and liked it better. Most computers come with word processing, spreadsheets, etc. so I feel like now I need to delete all those files I've put on my home computer. I don't think the school district would allow open office download.
One advantage I can see is for refurbished computers. If districts and companies are upgrading computer systems and strip the software from their old computers to donate to shelters, hospital waiting rooms, etc. I can see it being useful. I'm not sold on these tools and wish I hadn't downloaded the open office suite.

Thing #17 Rollyo

Don't think I did it correctly since all I got was a blank screen with done in bottom corner. Also, couldn't find my searchroll or make the rollbar icon to drag to menu bar. Bummer! I will continue to play (oops, I mean--work) on this. This is the first "thing" that I am really frustrated with so that's not too bad. However, I will succeed one day! (with a little help from my friends, I hope!)

Thing #16 wikis

Love wikis! Started one for my school--haven't heard back from the principal if she likes it or not. Going to make one page on personal wiki for planning a trip with friends from all across the state rather than emailing back and forth. Can see using it for assignments and loved the idea that students have ownership and do better work since their peers are reading their entries.
I added to the SBISD wiki, too.
Possibilities are endless.

Thing #15 - library 2.0

It's many things to many people--oh, how right you are!
What does it mean to you? It is so much stuff that I am always swimming upstream while others seem to be easily commenting and completing each "thing".
I do believe that libraries have to change to be able to continue to provide "services" to patrons. A library can no longer expect to be the oasis of quiet it has been in the past. I agree that librarians have to meet their patrons wherever they are--home, class, work, play. Collections need to evolve to include library 2.0 sites and computer access for patrons.
What does it mean for school libraries? School libraries will have a harder time of changing due to teacher/administration resistance. In school districts there are too many restrictions from filters, firewalls, policies, and "red-tape" in providing all these tools 2 use. I really hope that my school district will allow flickr, del.icio.us, etc.
Students do spend more time online than in books. I loved the teachertube video from KSU. How clever and right on!

Thing #14 technorati and tags

I am overwhelmed with technorati. I just don't think I have the time to sift through all the information found just on their main page much less all the blogs, tags, and other info bits sprinkled all over the place. WOW!
When searching for School Library Learning 2.0 basically the same results showed up. In reading them I wasn't impressed with the blogs and most I have seen at one time or another.
When looking over the tags it was quite amusing. Face sitting was almost porn-like and I'm no prude but it's pretty hilarious that it is one of the top ones.
I might just be tired from the past few days of camping so I'll take another look. Also, I couldn't get the button to show up on my page either. But I did claim my blog.
Onto thing 15!
